Parashat Eiqev - Thu, 29 Jul 2010
Torah Tidbits Audio

And it shall come to pass, because ye hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep with thee the covenant and the mercy which He swore unto thy fathers, and He will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; He will also bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy land, thy corn and thy wine and thine oil, the increase of thy kine and the young of thy flock, in the land which He swore unto thy fathers to give thee. Thou shalt be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle. And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness; and He will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee, but will lay them upon all them that hate thee. And thou shalt consume all the peoples that the LORD thy God shall deliver unto thee; thine eye shall not pity them; neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

Hour 1
Now there's no excuse not to get off that couch, see Israel and exercise, too. Chaim Wizeman has opened a store called Al Derech Burma ( "On the Burma Road ") that caters to sports enthusiasts who want the best equipment for their respective sport.Biking, running, camping and other gear can be purchased or rented. Guides, advice, maps and path suggestions for group and individual trips are also available. Chaim has also drawn on his eclectic background to bring kids of varying backgrounds together to foster friendships and relationships thru physical activity. He's a great example of a Western oleh who didn't find what he needed in Israel but instead of
complaining, he made it happen. Lots more to be done, folks! www.alderechburma.com

Dr. Aren Maeir is wrapping up the 2010 dig at the ancient Philistine city of Gath. The Good Land - Wed, 28 Jul 2010
Mikdash Kids

This week's Torah portion connects the People of Israel with the Good Land of Israel. The Torah teaches us that the Land is good, and if we follow G-d's laws, the Land is ours. Our bond with the Holy Land of Israel effects the way we interact with nature, with agriculture and with the environment. There are agricultural laws that teach us to care for the poor and to be good to our workers. Other laws teach us to connect to Hashem by working the land. And: Anita Tucker tells a story which only a Jewish farmer in the Land of Israel could tell. Then: Rabbi Shaul David Yudelman, director of the Ecological Beit Midrash in Jerusalem, shares his Torah thoughts about taking care of the Land while taking care of the world.

This week from the TEMPLE INSTITUTE:
WEEKLY TORAH PORTION: EIKEV: Moshe prepares the people for entering the land of Israel. They will need to take up arms in order to conquer the land, and they will need to take up their plowshares in order to settle and cultivate the land. But ultimately, in order to set down roots both deep and unassailable, they will need to perform the commandments that G-d commanded them. The same is every bit as true today. It is Torah that weds us to the land of Israel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es8oFH-J6LI

It could be a mater of life and death!
